For the second year in a row, Just Mystic partnered with Project Oceanology to make t-shirts for summer camp — and they look quite good!
As members of the Mystic community, we were thrilled to collaborate with the good folks at this organization. Project Oceanology, more commonly referred to as “Project O,” is a non-profit organization embracing place-based learning by providing marine science education to residents along the Long Island Sound.
Founded in 1972 by Dr. Howard “Mickey” Weiss and a consortium of local school districts — including Groton, Bozrah, East Lyme, Ledyard, Waterford, and more — Project O has been offering hands-on marine science learning experiences and public boat cruises to the community for over 50 years, and their youth summer camp offerings are some of the most sought-after in the region.
Students at Project O’s summer camp decorated their t-shirts with ocean-inspired designs, and then got busy collecting data! A typical day at summer camp may include collecting water quality samples, tracking seal behavior and population trends, or deploying trawl nets off the back of the “Enviro-Lab,” Project O’s aptly named research vessel, to collect and observe marine life.
Project O offers day camps of varying lengths and residential (sleepaway) camps for students in grades 4-12. While the summer season of 2024 has come to a close, follow and join their mailing list to get a jump on 2025!
